Saving the best till last, the orchestra’s final concert for 2023 is entitled Spotlight on the Double Bass. Conducted by Paul Dean, the orchestra will perform the audience favourite Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn which is commonly referred to as ‘Fingal’s Cave’. We will then be joined by the principal bassist of the Queensland Youth Symphony, Alyssa Deacon for Bottesini’s, Double Bass Concerto no.2. This concerto is one of the most performed solo works for bass and demonstrates the full range of the bass, with virtuosic playing from the soloist. The final work in the concert is Sibelius’ Symphony no.5, which boasts one of the greatest finales of all time. For this concert, the orchestra will visit the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba on 29 October and Brisbane City Hall on 5 November.
